活性酸素による核酸の酸化に起因する生体の障害とその防御機構の解明 -発がんから神経変性まで-

DNA and its precursor nucleotides are constantly exposed to the danger of oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated during normal metabolism or by environmental exposure. DNA and nucleotides exposed to ROS undergo oxidation, and if not repaired or removed, such modified nucleotides can cause cancer by inducing mutations, or cause degenerative diseases by inducing cell dysfunction or death. In my lecture, I will present our findings on the genomic damage caused by oxidatively modified nucleotides, its defense mechanisms, and pathologies caused by disruption of the defense mechanisms.
